Quiltberry Hill's Embroidery Project

Meet Hillary Cooper, a long-time embroidery client of MAKE Vancouver and a well-known Vancouver-based quilter, pattern-maker and creative.

Tell us a bit about your business

My business is Quiltberry Hill Designs and I am a modern quilt pattern designer. You might be asking what exactly is that? If you think about a recipe book, I write the recipe for someone to make their own quilt. While I have been quilting for over 25 years, I started my business last year. I love playing with design and colour and seeing how you can change a traditional pattern by moving shapes ever so slightly.

Is this the first time you've worked with MAKE?

This is not the first time that I have used MAKE Vancouver for embroidery. In fact, the first time I used them was way back in 1998 when they were called Just In Stitches for a wedding quilt for my sister.

I don't have an embroidery machine and I have used MAKE to embroidery pieces of fabric that I can use for my quilt labels. It is a really special way to finish a special project.

My daughter had her bat mitzvah during COVID which meant that we had to do the service outside. I ordered fleece blankets and had MAKE embroider a special logo for her on the blanket. This served to keep people warm but also as a great memento for guests to take with them of the day.

This weekend I am off to QuiltCon in Atlanta for the Modern Quilt Guild Show. I brought a dozen pieces of light weight canvas to MAKE and had them embroider my logo on them that I could incorporate in something that I could take with me to the show.

How was your experience at MAKE?

There were some difficulties because my logo had several tiny berries under a spool that would have been lost and strange looking if stitched out. The graphic team used one of the berries and enlarged it so that the logo has the same feel and looks beautiful as well. I really appreciated the back and forth helpfulness of the team to get it right.

.

Were you happy with the final result?

I worked with the great team at MAKE to get my logo just the way I wanted it.

As I was finishing up placing my order, I noticed the hats to the right of the counter.  You guys just happened to have the right shade of pink baseball cap so I had that embroidered as well.  Now I will head out with my bag and hat and I will definitely not be missed at QuiltCon!

.

Are you going to embroider anything else with us?

I will continue to use MAKE for embroidery and I highly recommend reaching out to their team with your image before you go so that you can be sure that you will be happy with the end result.

Any tips for someone looking to embroider at MAKE?

If you are going to do what I do and use a piece of fabric to be used in a project later, give yourself a couple of extra inches all the way around so that when the threads pull the fabric inward you will still have the measurements you need to do your project.

Are you on social media?

I am very active on Instagram @quiltberryhill_designs and I love to see all the projects that people make.  If you want to purchase one of my PDF patterns you can go to www.quiltberryhilldesigns.com
